I am a new Mommy. My beloved little girl is a year and a half now and she is not only the light of my Husband and my lives, she is everything to her doting Grandparents. Over our pregnancy and as she was a newborn her Grandmas showered her with pink, frilly gifts as my Bean is the first girl grandchild in both of our families. Once she was here I was on the phone with them everyday asking those endless new parent “is this normal?!?” questions. They were patiently answered no matter the time of night, something I am forever grateful for. I think that my Mother took more than a little delight that much like myself as a newborn, my little girl never wanted to sleep. “Turnabout is fair play” was a gift, but to express my gratitude in a more tangible manner I spent ages hunting for special grandparent gifts.
There are many treasures made just for Grandma or Grandpa, an entire world I never thought of before starting my journey into motherhood. My own Grandmother still has a number of her grandparent gifts in the form of Grandma’s Girl and My First Birthday picture frames holding cherished memories of sister and I. Figurines of Grandma rocking her beloved Grandbaby to sleep. Now photos of my daughter sit along side these on her mantle.
Since my Mother is a voracious reader, we found her a beautiful bookmark that says “I love Grandma” and added a picture of Bean from her first birthday. Now that toothy smile is looking up at Mom every time she relaxes and opens her favorite book. Grandpa received a Grandpa Love Mug as his cup of coffee is a permanent fixture on his desk. He tells us how it brightens each morning, no small feat as he is the exact opposite of a morning person!
My Husband’s parents are further away so we keep a steady stream of grandparent gifts in the form of picture frames marking her milestones arriving on their doorstep. When Bean gets older a “Going to Grandma’s Suitcase” will be in order. A gift that I hope both of them will cherish. Grandpa is going to need a diaper and wipe bag as it has been a very long time since he’s been on diaper duty. Hopefully he will take it as a loving push towards helping in that arena!
