Mother’s Day and birthdays mean spring and fall for me: that’s the time I make every effort to get home to Minnesota to see my Mom: around Mother’s Day in the spring and in October for her birthday (and I usually miss the snowy weather at these designated times, but not this year on the coming or the coming back!). This last week was the week to head off to Mom’s and Grandmother’s and Great Grandmother’s House! My daughter Rebekah and her 19-month old son drove the long trip with me, making this a great grand adventure, indeed!
Now a Great Grandmother of nine great grandchildren, my Mom had not gotten to meet Seth David, my first grandchild. My trips have often been done over a long weekend where I fly in late at the end of the week and fly home late Sunday night to get the most time to be with my Mom. I haven’t driven in quite a few years. A nineteen month old can be a joy in the car (maybe only to his Nana!), as long as there is apple juice, music and little surprises of books, crayons, and a soccer ball to kick on those quick gas-bathroom-and-food stops.
Seth David may well be the best Great Grandmother gift I have yet given my Mom! She was delighted with the little guy who is quick to smile, quick to interact and loves to chatter to most people he meets! My Mom lives in a very nice nursing home where she gets all the care and love she needs. She’s happy there and all the six girls in our family know she’s getting the special care she needs, and we all make the effort to get out to see her regularly. I know what I’ll always remember of this trip: Seth David and his Great Grandmother zipping down the hall while Seth sat on the walker and Mom pushed him proudly through the halls!
Advise from Nana: Remember Grandmother and Great Grandmother this Mother’s Day with a gift they will treasure: a visit from you and/or a grand or great grandchild!
